Saint-Pierre cathedral was commissioned by Pope Urbain V in 1364. Its southern Gothic style, massive profile, and dominating portico supported by two circular columns, give the effect of a medieval fortress.
In 1181 Lord Guilhem VIII signed a surprising and far-reaching edict. He declared that anyone, regardless of religion or background, could teach medicine in Montpellier... And thus was born, at the end of the 12th century, what is today's oldest operating medical school in the occidental world.

At the end of the 17th century, the king's intendant decided to create this triumphal arch, a copy of the gates of Paris, in honour of Louis XIV, built where one of the gates of the ancient ramparts used to be.
The Montpellier Botanical Garden is one of the oldest in Europe. It was created by order of Henri IV in 1593 for Pierre Richer de Belleval (1564-1632). At the time it served as a model for designing all the botanical gardens in France, including the one in Paris 40 years later.
Over two centuries a large number of private mansions were built in the city, homes that were signs of their owner's prosperity. Noblemen and rich traders built nearly one hundred such luxurious buildings in the centre.
